My Love-Hate Relationship with Tech

Look, I’ve been in this game for over two decades. I’ve seen tech come and go. I’ve seen trends that made sense and trends that made me scratch my head so hard I thought it’d fall off. And honestly? I’m still not sure what a blockchain is, but that’s not the point.

I’m not one of those tech evangelists who thinks every new gadget is the second coming of Christ. Nope. I’m the guy who still uses a physical notepad because I like the feel of pen on paper. I’m the guy who’s had the same phone for three years because, frankly, it works fine. I’m the guy who rolls his eyes when someone says, “But it’s in the cloud!”

Remembering the Good Old Days

Back in ’98, I was at a conference in Austin. It was hotter than a server room in July. There was this guy, let’s call him Marcus, who was going on about how the internet was gonna change everything. I laughed. I mean, I was still using dial-up, for crying out loud. But he was right, wasn’t he? The internet did change everything. But not always for the better.

I remember sitting with a colleague named Dave over coffee at the place on 5th. We were talking about how tech was making us lazy. “You ever notice how people can’t remember anything anymore?” Dave asked. “They just Google it.” I nodded. “Yeah, but can they Google their way out of a conversation?”

The AI Hype Train

And now we’ve got AI. Everyone’s talking about it. It’s gonna revolutionize everything. It’s gonna make us all unemployed. It’s gonna take over the world. Honestly, I think it’s just another tool. A really fancy, really complicated tool that most people don’t need.

I had this argument with my friend Sarah last Tuesday. She’s all into this AI stuff. “It’s gonna make our lives easier,” she said. “It’s gonna do all the boring stuff so we can focus on the fun stuff.” I said, “Or it’s gonna do all the stuff so we don’t have to do anything. And then what? We just sit around, staring at our screens, waiting for the robots to bring us our next meal?”

She laughed. “You’re such a drama queen, Mark.” Maybe I am. But I’m not alone. There are alot of people out there who are kinda freaked out by all this tech stuff. And frankly, they should be.

Tech Should Work for Us, Not the Other Way Around

Look, I’m not saying we should all go back to using typewriters. I’m not saying we should reject every new piece of tech that comes our way. But I am saying we should be careful. We should think about what we’re using and why we’re using it.

I’ve seen too many people become slaves to their tech. They’re always checking their phones. They’re always connected. They’re always available. It’s like they’re afraid to miss out on something. But what are they missing out on? Life, that’s what.

I remember when I was in college, I had this professor who said, “Technology is a tool. It’s only as good as the person using it.” I think about that alot. Because it’s true. Tech is just a tool. It’s not a replacement for common sense. It’s not a replacement for human interaction. It’s not a replacement for good old-fashioned hard work.

The Human Touch

I think that’s what people are forgetting. They’re so focused on the latest gadget or the newest app that they’re forgetting about the human touch. They’re forgetting about the importance of looking someone in the eye and having a real conversation. They’re forgetting about the value of a handwritten note or a phone call.

I’m not saying we should reject tech. I’m saying we should use it wisely. We should use it to enhance our lives, not control them. We should use it to bring us closer together, not drive us further apart.

And for the love of God, can we please stop using “literally” to mean “figuratively”? It’s driving me nuts.

Anyway, that’s my take. I’m sure there are people out there who disagree with me. That’s fine. I’m not here to win a popularity contest. I’m here to tell it like it is. And if that means I have to be the guy who’s always complaining about tech, then so be it. Someone’s gotta do it.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a date with my notepad and a cup of coffee. And no, I’m not gonna use an app to find the perfect brew. I’m gonna do it the old-fashioned way. I’m gonna ask a barista. Because sometimes, the human touch is just what you need.
