Look, I’m Over It

Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been in this tech journalism game since the dial-up days—remember those? The sound? The waiting? The sheer joy when you finally got connected? Yeah, me neither. But I digress.

Point is, I’ve seen trends come and go. Remember virtual reality? Augmented reality? Blockchain? NFTs? (Don’t even get me started on NFTs.) And now, it’s all about AI. Specifically, chatbots. Honestly, I’m sick of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-AI. I’m not some Luddite screaming about robots taking our jobs. I’m just… tired. Tired of the hype. Tired of the same old stories. Tired of the fact that every other article I read is about some new chatbot that’s gonna revolutionize the world.

So, let’s talk about this. Let’s talk about why I’m over chatbots, why I think we need to calm down, and what else is out there that’s actually interesting.

First, Let’s Talk About Hype

I was at a conference in Austin last month. You know the kind—lots of suits, lots of jargon, lots of people pretending they understand what everyone’s talking about. (I’m guilty of it too, don’t worry.)

Anyway, there was this guy, let’s call him Marcus, giving a talk about how chatbots are gonna solve world hunger. I kid you not. He stood up there, all serious, talking about how these little text-based robots are gonna feed the planet. I mean, come on. I turned to the guy next to me, a colleague named Dave, and said, “Dave, is this guy serious?”

Dave just shrugged and said, “It’s the future, man. You gotta embrace it.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But still. World hunger? Really?

Look, I get it. Chatbots are cool. They can answer questions, they can write emails, they can even write articles (though frankly, I think that’s cheating). But are they really the end-all-be-all of technology? I don’t think so.

But What About the Good Stuff?

Okay, okay. I’ll admit it. Chatbots can be useful. I’ve used them myself. There’s this one chatbot, let’s call it ChatPal, that I use to help with customer service for my custom t-shirt business. It’s not perfect, but it’s a hell of a lot better than nothing. It can answer simple questions, it can point people in the right direction, and it can even take orders. Which is great, because honestly, I’d rather be designing shirts than answering emails.

But here’s the thing. Chatbots are just one small part of the AI world. There’s so much more out there. There’s computer vision, there’s natural language processing, there’s machine learning. And don’t even get me started on robotics. I mean, have you seen what they’re doing with robotics these days? It’s insane.

But no, everyone’s too busy talking about chatbots. It’s like we’re stuck in this never-ending loop of “Oh look, a chatbot can do this now!” “Wow, a chatbot can do that now!” “Check it out, a chatbot can do everything now!”

It’s exhausting.

And Don’t Even Get Me Started on the Ethics

I was having coffee with a friend last Tuesday. Her name’s Sarah, she’s a lawyer. And she was telling me about this case she’s working on, something about AI and privacy. I don’t remember all the details, but the gist of it was that some company was using AI to collect data on people without their consent. And not just any data—personal data. Private data. The kind of data that can really screw you over if it falls into the wrong hands.

And I’m sitting there, listening to her, and I’m thinking, “This is exactly why we need to have a conversation about AI that goes beyond just chatbots.” Because it’s not all fun and games. There are real issues here. Real consequences.

But do we talk about them? No. We’re too busy talking about chatbots. It’s like we’re willfully ignoring the elephant in the room because it’s easier than dealing with the messy, complicated stuff.

So, What’s the Solution?

I’m not sure. I wish I had an answer. But I think the first step is to calm down. To take a breather. To realize that chatbots aren’t the be-all-end-all of technology. They’re just one small part of a much bigger picture.

And while we’re at it, maybe we should start paying attention to the other stuff. The stuff that’s not as flashy, not as attention-grabbing, but is just as important. Like cybersecurity. Or data privacy. Or, you know, actually useful applications of AI that don’t involve text-based robots.

I’m not saying we should ignore chatbots completely. They have their uses. But we need to put them in perspective. To remember that they’re just one tool among many. And to start having conversations about the other tools too.

Because honestly, I’m tired of reading the same old stories. I’m tired of the hype. I’m tired of the fact that every other article I read is about some new chatbot that’s gonna change the world. So, let’s talk about something else. Let’s talk about the real issues. The real challenges. The real opportunities.

And if we can do that, maybe, just maybe, we can start having a more nuanced, more thoughtful conversation about AI. One that goes beyond just chatbots. One that actually matters.

But for now, I’m gonna go back to designing t-shirts. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll use a chatbot to help me with the customer service. But that’s it. I’m done with the hype.

Oh, and if you’re looking for some actual useful information on tech, check out this product reviews recommendation guide. It’s not about chatbots, I promise.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got. Thanks for reading. And remember, chatbots aren’t the end of the world. But they’re not the end of the conversation either.
